  1. Tank size is only one of many factors that will affect growth rates in fish.  Genetic or environmental stunting happens a lot with aquarium fish.  Temperature, food quality and quantity and accumulated nitrates will have an affect on your angel fish.  Angel fish tend to be more high strung than most other fish so a planted aquarium with medium to dark gravel and driftwood helps them to feel secure.  In a cycled tank, 20% to 50% weekly water changes are recommended but if your tank has not finished cycling, it may be necessary to do more.

A good rule of thumb when shopping for an aquarium is to think big and buy bigger.  Ask about extra high show tanks because for the same base area, you can get a deeper tank that your angel fish will really appreciate and you will enjoy watching them more.  Some stores don't stock show tanks but will be happy to order one for you.  They usually cost a bit more because they require thicker glass than regular tanks but the stands, hood, filters and accessories will not cost you any more.

  2.   No, they do not grow to suit the tank, no fish does.

A 20 high is the minimum you need for one angel, or a breeding pair.  They need this tank height as they are tall fish.  The inch per gallon nonsense does not apply to laterally compressed fish.

If you plan on getting tankmates, as most folks do, start with at least a 29 with a single angel or mated pair.  20 highs are mainly used by breeders, with no substrate & no decorations.  Substrate reduces the water depth, you want at least 16 inches of water depth for standard fins, 18 inches for veils.

  3. one gallon for each inch the fish is long, use the max length he will get.

  4. are you talking about freshwater angelfish ???

they need at least 20 gallon ( high)

if yuor talking about saltwater then dont go under 70 gallons ( most saltwater angels will need 150 plus )
