    The old shell probably smells worse than the fresh one.

  4. A fresh egg is slightly denser than an old one.  Put them in water deep enough to float them.  If one does float it is rotten.  The fresher one will sink slightly faster and move less when you stir the water, and come to a  full stop before the less fresh one does.

    Do not try to open and cook an egg that floats.

    If you are thinking of just the shell and not the egg then a fresh shell is more brittle than an old one.  AN old shell will flex a bit before snapping.  A fresh shell has almost no flex at all.
