Question:

How Can I Decorate The Side Of My New Driveway?

We live right on the end & along side of our home is an alley way. We just had a new cement driveway poured & widened. It looks great & cost a lot, however, we noticed that people are now cutting across our driveway to go down the alley way. We have a wooden fence halfway down, but cannot add to the length of the fence otherwise we would be going actually into the path of where cars would travel. Any good ideas how we can block cars from going through our driveway? I came up with the idea of putting 3 big planters along there with a couple of feet of space between them. Do you have any other ideas? Thanks for your help!

  1. You can consider large stone.

Can be expensive however they do not lose there value.

Large planters might be a good idea.

I just wonder if they have no respect now what stops them from damaging your planters? What hubby and I did in our alley/driveway was first put up construction tape using a 5 gallon bucket and tape to rope off area. This gave drivers a clue that this was not part of the thoroughfare, we lived with this long enough to stop the regulars then when the not so regulars came through they were more careful.

When they found they could no longer drive through the private property. We blocked it off with trees and plants..

We once had a trash truck even damage our property including the apron to the garage(cement)

If you own the area you mention as "the path of where car's will travel" why not extend your fence.

Now I am left with those who walk along and pick my vegetables, which I can live with...shareing is good.

Best to you in your venture to stopping traffic.

  2. Make a small brick wall too high to get over.  Bricks at Lowes are nice, they have good designs.  Get a color that matches your house.  No car will dare to go into a brick wall.  It's just common sense not to!  But get some cement or something otherwise they might fall.  We have a one level brick lining around our driveway for decoration and it looks gorgous!

  3. the flower pots are a good idea and I would also add some big boulder rocks in between. some may run the pots down being stupid but a huge rock they wouldn't dare.

  4. the planters would work, or a row of taller shrubs like arborvitae or hydrangea
