How Can I Find Out If A Landlord Is Reputable??

I'm in a situation where my landlord wants me and my downstairs neighbor to move out because he claims that we have traffic running in and out the apartment. He knew we had teenager before we moved in the apartment. I think the real reason this jerk wants us to move is because last week, while I was at work, I get a phone call from my daughter stating that the fire chief wanted to talk to me. I ended up talking to not only the fire chief but a representative from Code Enforcement. We found out that this scumbag has known that the apartment had a sewage problem that is too disgusting to talk about and also that the apartment has electrical problems. There is also a host of other problems but what gets me is that if it weren't for the fans and air conditioner we would have died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning because of the sewage system in the basement. So this week he posts a letter on our door stating that we have to be out by the end of the month. Unreal!! Answers Please Help!!

  1. I would talk to a lawyer and see if you can sue him.

  2. I believe in fighting fire with fire.  I would call the health department and ask them to come out and check your apartment.  I would explain the situation of the prior week, and that you feel that the manager is not being honest with you.  If the apartment has an health issue the owner would have to pay for your housing until they resolved the issue.

They can give you a 60 days to move without a cause.

Check with the Fair Housing Department in your city.

  3. I doubt that he could force you out in 5 days if you have a lease, but he was probably told by the inspectors that the apartment is uninhabitable. For your health, and that of your family, I would leave as soon as you find another place.
