  1. Just insert your Windows XP CD go to recovery console and type "fix mbr".

    Hope that helps.

  2. If you got a blue screen saying "STOP: memory dump ----" then try rebooting pc 3-4 times if it's recurring then either your RAM is faulty, if you have a spare RAM try replacing it and see if your computer works. If not, or if you don't have a spare RAM, try re-installing O/s, if ur RAM is ok, it will work.

MBR is affected if you install a different o/s on another o/s

If you have dual boot with windows xp & linux & you either upgrade xp to vista or triple boot with vista, xp & linux in most cases mbr will get affected & you will not see linux in the list.

Similarly if you have windows xp/2000 pro, and you installed previous version eg. windows 2000/win me, then the future version would not be listed. Then you need to re-insert cd of missing o/s, run  setup until u see PRESS 'R' to recover windows, press ENTER to install windows . At this point press "R", u'll be taken to a command prompt, select o/s then type FIXMBR and press enter, you will be asked to confirm press 'y', remove cd and restart ur computer & u will get ur missing o/s back - this is for windows, same process goes for other o/s's with some difference.

  3. If you can boot to a command prompt, you can type this.

    fdisk /mbr

If not then you will need to use a boot-disk loaded with fdisk.
