Question:

How Can I Get More Motivated To Play Guitar?

I've been playing guitar for about 2 years now, and I really haven't gotten much better in a 2-year period. I do enjoy playing guitar, but I don't really feel motivated, and I get really lazy. Every time I try to learn something new to play, I only learn like a part of it, and then I give up.

How can I get more motivated to play?

  1. Find a song you really really like and learn how to play it.  Also, I like to keep in mind I need to practice lest I embarass myself playing in front of other people.

  2. mm why dont u do something else ? like shop lifting and then get caught? so will have enough time in the jail for practicing your stupid guitar

  3. think of your faverote guitarest, and think about how well and how far they went, and think to your self, man i want to be like him/her.keep practicing even if its not fun but you will get better and it will be fun when it gets easier.

  4. You need to find someone to play to or play for. The hardest thing really is picking one song and really getting good at it. I would say find something you like, even if it's just a solo or short segment and really force yourself to master it. Stick with it no matter how tough or slowly you feel you are learning. You'll get it. Then record yourself playing. When you hear yourself playing when you AREN'T playing you'll be surprised how much better it sounds. Once you realize you can play well, you'll want to play more.

Record yourself periodically, even if you aren't great at playing. It's interesting to hear your progress. It's tough to appreciate the music you are making when you are actually practicing it. This ties back to my first sentence: Perform it... for yourself! :)

  5. try making up songs or practice on song that famous musician play

  6. I've had this happen before and it's nothing out of the ordinary for a lot of people who play instruments. Think about the reason WHY you wanted to play guitar in the first place and go from there. That's the main thing that should get you motivated. If you don't have a reason/goal, you're not going to get anywhere.

Unlike you, I take lessons and I remember somewhere in the middle of my 3 1/2 years of playing where I would practice everyday, but not enough (this was because I wasn't motivated like before to keep going). I got a wake up call when I realized that I not only wanted to practice to get closer to where I wanted to be on guitar (and please myself), but I also didn't want to let my teacher down. Those factors alone got the fire in me to practice again (and for longer periods). I also remembered that I wanted to play like John Mayer as well (still do).

You know what? Maybe you should take lessons (if you really have desire to learn and a good enough reason to). Perhaps that's just what you need: when you have someone else to make happy, not just yourself you'll work at it and not be lazy.

  7. I think its either there or it isnt... If you're not getting motivated, put it down for a little while and pick it back up when you get the itch again.

  8. I don't know, but if you find out let me know!! :)

  9. you have to find something that inspires you, try writing your own music

  10. Play with a group.  Sometimes a church will have a contemporary service or children's choir.  It may not be the music you want to play, but practice is practice.
