Question:

How Can I Improve On Tennis?

I'm going into high school in the fall, and the tennis team won't begin until Spring 2009. I'm not very good at tennis, and I can't afford the lessons. How can I improve, and learn the moves in tennis? Thanks! =]

  1. You can practice on a wall....

half an hour everyday....and you'll become 50 times better

    Best of Luck...!!!

  2. hmmm. like my high school has this wall(just a regular wall, like how we have walls in our rooms). and i used to throw the ball at the wall, then run to it, to catch it. i think that'll make you run faster to the ball. and when you get really good. try getting a tennis racket and then keep hitting it against the wall back and forth and see how many times you hit it until you dont hit it.

  3. Its going to be tough but not impossible. Definitely check out the website www.fuzzyyellowballs.com

They do a great job on instruction. What you can try doing is if you have a digital camera that can record video, you can go buy a cheap tripod (around 20-30 bucks) record yourself hitting (if you can't find someone to feed you balls, you can hit against a racquetball wall) and record yourself hitting the tennis ball back and forth. Then you can review and see how your strokes compare to the ones you see in the video instruction.

Couple notes when hitting against the wall. if it doesn't have a line painted to mark the approximate height of the net, just bring out some tape and mark it off for your own reference. Take it easy, placement before power and aim to hit no higher than 3-4 ft  above the net mark.

    Good luck!

  4. Depends on how much you already know, but I'll play it safe and assume you know nothing.

-Start off by hitting against a big brick wall. This will improve your basic shot ability. Aim to get 5 shots back, then 10 etc..

    - Then move onto the court. Start all over again with a partner, and keep it simple. Try and get 5 shots back, then 10 etc...

    - Practising serve: Practise tossing the ball high and slightly in front of you. The ball toss is key to the serve. Once you have a good and consistent ball toss, try and hit it in (note: you hit a serve when the ball is at the height of it's toss)

    - By "moves" I assume you mean shots. Amateurs start hitting flat shots (straight across the ball, no spin).

    - Once you are consistent with your shots you can learn top spin and slice, which is difficult to teach over the net!, especially top spin.

-In terms of your backhand, use a two hander, if you don't already. I don't have a two hander, but I did start with a two hander and it is very easy to learn and hit shots with.

    - In terms of competing, start off just trying to get the ball back. Especially without being able to hit with topspin, it is very difficult to consistently hit winners. Same with the serve, don't go for the big serve.

-As long as you keep playing you will always improve.

-If you have any more questions feel free to message/email me or read the various teaching articles on this website:

Diagrams are provided and they are generally very useful.

    Good luck!
