Question:

How Can I Make My House Cat Shed Less!??

I have 2 housecats, a male & female (both fixed) and the male sheds considerably more than the female. I have tried the wet paper towel, brushing, vacuuming his coat, and taking him outside & "de-furring" him, but nothing works.

Is there anything I can do?

He is a medium-haired spotted Egyptian Mau/Maine Coone mix.

  1. Unfortunately you can't stop him from shedding. If he sheds more when its coming up to summer you could always take him to a groomer and have him clipped ( you might get your other cat clipped too so he isn't as embarrassed ), but this depends in what sort of climate you live in too. You don't want them to be too cold. I hope this helped.

  2. Cats do shed differently. There is not much you can do about it short of brushing your cat to try to remove some of the hair, but of course even this doesnt help a whole lot as you probably already know. Usually cats tend to shed more in the summer and retain more in the winter do to the cold days. But again all cats are different and this doesnt apply to every cat.

LOL I have a cat I think the same of!! (The ADHA Thing) :)

    Good Luck

  3. I have the answer for you!  It's called the Furminator; strange name but it does work.

It's a new type of comb that gets the undercoat, and all lose hair.  I was very skeptical, but it really does work.  You need to be very careful not to do it in the same spot, since it will make the hair very thin.  But so far, so good.

If he loves being brushed, you should have no problem.  They're kind of expensive, but I think worth the cost.  I've ruined vaccumes by all the hair I clean up each week.

    Good luck.

  4. I use the furminator on my cat and he loves it.  I always give him something to play with before I sit down to brush him and he will let me brush for as long as I need.  Maybe you could try giving him a snack while brushing or a toy to keep his attention.  My cats hate going to the groomer and I just can't stand to do that to them.

  5. Dawn, I have the same problem. My boy kitty sheds wayyyy more than my girl kitty, and it must be a guy thing? Well anyways, I have found that taking him to a groomer (PetCo, Pet Smart, your local vet, humane society, etc) helps A LOT. Try that, and see where that takes you. But expect this: he probably won't like it the first time!

  6. nope.

  7. Do a web search for Miracle Coat Shed Reducer, or ask your vet to recommend a similar product.  They do help, if your cat will allow you to spray the stuff on him.

  8. Cats do this, and some cats do it more than others. It is just a fact of keeping cats, I have four and the fir goes everywhere. Brushing will help, but unfortunately you are already doing this! I don't think you can do much else. I can tell that you clearly love your cats and eventually you will get used to cleaning a little more often to cope with the shedding. Good luck!!!

  9. Unfortunately, there is nothing that you can do about it. Cats have different shedding patterns, and they won't always be the same as another cat. So you will probably be picking up cat fur for the rest of the time you own this cat, lol. But it should drop to a lesser amount in the winter, when a warmer coat is needed.

    I hope this helped...
