Question:

How Can I Replace a Sheet of Vinyl Flooring?

I have a sheet of vinyl in my entry way. I need a temporary fix, until I can replace the carpet. Can I pull up the vinyl without disturbing the molding around it, place a thin sheeting down and then lay vinyl peel and stick tiles? My reasoning for the sheeting is that peel and stick are so hard to remove, I want to be able to lift them when I replace the carpet and put some permanent flooring down. Will this last for the year or longer if need be?

Thank you in advance for any input.

  1. The vinyl is probably installed under the molding. I'd recommmend using the vinyl planks or tiles from Home Depot that stick to each other but not the floor. They could be laid right over the vinyl. They're fairly cheap and would definitely last more than a year. You can use double-sided carpet tape to hold them down at the edges if they're not going to have molding over them..

  2. I am assuming that what you have is just the subfloor showing. Vinyl flooring does need to be stuck down, otherwise it will warp, twist, and otherwise not look good or hold up.

Two simple alternatives: get a carpet remenant and use it to cover that area or

Lightly sand, seal and paint the subfloor with semi gloss porch paint, or stain and polyurathane it. I have seen several instances where we painted or stained sub flooring and it looks better than a hack job with cheap vinyl flooring.
