How Can I check my home phone messages when im on vacation?

ive heard people say that you have to call your home number and press star..but that doesnt work for my phone. i have verizon if anyone has any ideas please dont hesitate.please and thankyou :]

You could just divert your home phone to your mobile/cell phone.

Get an answering machine with the feature that allows you to call  it and listen to your messages. Picked mine up for around $10. I've only used the feature once , I bought it to screen out telemarketers.

get a cell phone and tell people your phone number or have someone stay at the house that could check them for you and tell you who was it and so on.
