How Can I get better gas mileage & a oil question.

Ok i have a 2000 dodge dakota slt extended cab 3.9l v6. I checked the gas mileage and im getting 16 mpg. I cleaned my air filter and started buying the gas with no ethonal. && i been using 10w-30 synthetic what owners manual recomended shud i just use 5w-30 synthetic of stick to owners manual?

  1. you can stay with what the manual says to use in it,on that vehicle the most mileage you will probably get will be around 16-18 at the most on it,the 3.9 got worse mileage then th ev-8 did,when its running right on the open highway you should average around 16-18 ,maybe a little more,those just wasnt that great on gas,good luck.


  2. You should stick to what the book recommends and you could try changing your gas filter , doing a minor tune up on the plugs and wires , check the pcv valve and I'd soon be changing or checking the fuel pressure regulator.

    Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way it's best to keep using the grade of oil you're now using and don't ever switch grades or use anything but the recommended synthetic oil, meaning don't go back to regular oil with that engine especially if you've being running synthetic oils for awhile.
