Question:

How Can Laser Eye Surgery Help With Someone Who Has Amblyopia ?

I am an adult that has Amblyopia,(was not correct as a child) as far as I was aware, nothing can be done to make the eye better after the age of 8. I looked into having some laser eye surgery a few years ago,& was told that I am not suitable.

Now I am getting conflicting information. I have since found out that a company would do the treatment, I have also recently been back to the first company that I asked and they say I am not suitable.

I am confused, how can any eye surgery make a bad eye see clearly again ?. Amblyopia is when the eye decides to switch off from the brain at an early age because the signal from the brain to that eye are not the same as the other eye. I dont need to know anymore about the condition.

Just, how are these surgeons claiming that the sight can be restored (if it was never there).

I am very longsighted, my good eye is +5.00, and I couldnt tell you what the bad eye is, there is some slight vision(not blurred but like double).

Thanks

  1. Forget about laser surgery (i.e.LASIK). They will not work for you.

Neurovision may be helpful (available in SNEC, Singapore National Eye Centre).

Many amblyopes reported vision improvements after Neurovision treatment. (I am have financial links with Neurovision) SNEC did a pilot study and the prelim results was positive. The large scale study is still underwent.

Occlusion therapy is next in line (aka patching). This is troublesome for the patient and may not work well for adults.

Realignment surgery can be done to "straighten" the eyes if there is "crossed eye" but the lazy will still be lazy.

    Hope this helps
