I would love to be one of those people that go backpacking and travel the world...At the same time I am extremely career and ladder oriented. However it aways seems that they are mutually exclusive and one can only be at the expense of the other.....

  1. Become a tattooist

  2. In my job I can get away for a month every year for my backpacking adventures and still have a couple of weeks for normal holidays. It's just how the days-off and holiday entitlement  can be manipulated  together. I'm sure my job isn't unique in that respect. I've been to every continent except Antarctica.Check my answers on travel questions. I've had some great times, and you can too. It's the best education ever,in a social sense. Meet people where they live, and live with them. Check the time-off structure for any job you're going for. There's life outside of work, but the work has to be done to pay for it. Hope you find a decent way to combine both.

  3. Become self employed! I am a successful Property Developer &  i will be off to Dubai at the end of March, i can take my holidays when i like, and i just fit my work around what i want to do. Good Luck whatever you decide to do!

  4. Get a job in the tourist industry, join the armed forces (added extras here).  Get a job on a cruise ship.

  5. A career should always be based around a the life you want to live. If you want to work in a job because you like the structure of having a boss and someone to answer to then great; get a job in sales, product pioneering, or remote team management. Your employer will send you to different locations for the company however you wont get very much time to explore on your own except maybe on a  weekend. A helpful tip for this strategy is to save your vacation days for a single large block so you can travel to your hearts content once a year, see if you can get your vacation days to coincide with your business trips so you can take a couple days vacation while your employer pays for the tickets!

I would recommend starting your own business around a life of travel such as a courrier, importer/exporter, or even as a writer. You can also start an E-business that you can run remotely from any location with a personal computer. There is more risk this way, but there can be more reward aswell.

Either way it mostly comes down to what takes more priority in your life and what compramises you are willing to make.
