Oh my goodness, good for you!  It can be hard work, but so incredibly rewarding.

There are many sites: there is Ancestry.com, familysearch.org, Genealogy.com, Cyndi's list, the sites are endless.  You can also go to town halls in person or the National Archives in your areas.  Cemetery records are another  way of finding origins.

1.  First start with anyone alive in your family who can give you info.  Get as much as you can from them.  They can direct  you to areas of births and deaths of family members. If they will allow you to, look through all the old family documents.

2. Go to familysearch.com.  This is a free site and you can search census areas, but these are on fairly old ancestors.
