  1. After the trading deadline, players can still change teams but they have to clear waivers first. Nowadays this seems a formality and players are allowed through, so they can get traded.

If another team had claimed Dunn on waivers, Cincinnati could chose to recall him and cancel the trade, or let him go to the team that claimed him for a fee.

  2. I'm thinking that the July 31 deadline is for trades between NL and AL . . . but I'm not certain.

  3. if a team makes a waiver claim on a player like the d-backs did with Dunn, they are permitted to negoitiate a trade

  4. it has to do with waivers

  5. he went to the free agents when his contract expired and the D-backs were able to pick him up

  6. One of two ways. Either:

No one claimed Dunn on waivers - making him eligible to be traded to any team. OR

The Diamondbacks were the lowest team in the NL standings to claim Dunn. The Reds and DBacks then had 48 hours to work out a trade. Looks like that may have been the way it happened.

  7. it is because dunn was placed on waivers and if a player clears waivers than he can be traded. but he did not clear waivers and the diamondbacks picked him up. so here is the answer the diamondbacks placed dallas buck on waivers also and the reds picked him off the waiver wire. the reds (my team by the way and i am typing through tons of anger here) placed adam dunn on the waiver wire also so the diamond backs picked him up. so basically it is a normal trade but it was done through waivers. i might not have the whole clear waiver thing right but the trade was done through waivers. also it is always a bit of a risk to do this because another team could pick him up and then you get nothing for said player. former reds GM Jim Bowden did this in the 90's so the dodgers could not get the player they wanted and the team that had said player got nothing. but this is a rare occurrence because it is basically a gentleman's agreement not to do what bowden did. hope this helps.

  8. through waivers its kind of like a trade

  9. Teams can claim players off of waivers after the trade deadline.

  10. i think it was because adam dunns contract was finished with the reds.. and the dbacks pulled him out from free agency..

  11. The July 31st is the non-waiver trade deadline, all players traded before the real deadline of August 31st have to clear waivers before they can be traded.

  12. b dough is right, im glad someone knows what they are talking about when they answer these questions....... why would there be a deadline just for inter-league trading?? preposterous!!
