Question:

How Come Every House....?

on the show "Flip This House" the landlords always choose to restore hardwood floor that is always magically underneath the dirty carpet. Why not just put in new carpet?

Personally I hate houses that are all hardwood. I would never buy one because they stay too cool in the summer and in the winter.

Does anyone have thoughts on this?

  1. I'm with you with the fancy sinks....I prefer just a normal sink nothing fancy for me.

The things that irks me about those shows is that the people are more concerned about small details like counter top sinks and fixtures more than having a structurally sound house.

  2. If you don't like hardwoods, you don't have to choose them.  We have built three new homes in 14 yrs. and have always chosen hardwoods because they are so low maintenance and quite warm and beautiful.  I am no fan of carpet.  There are many choices when building or upgrading a home so no one HAS to accept anything they do not like.  The upgrades these days are stunning but again all a matter of choice.

Don't get hyped on the so called radon scare with stone counters.  It just isn't a factor....just another reason to try to frighten people where there is nothing.  Everything in a home emits trace levels of something.  This is much ado about nothing.

  3. Hard floors are two things:

    A. In style

    B. Easier to clean up than carpet

If you spill something on the carpet, good luck trying to get the stain out. Spill something on the hardwood, just take a paper towel and wipe it up, no cleaning products needed.

    And they're pretty :)

  4. I think hardwood floors are the new "in" thing.  I like hardwood floors, but I think about all that dust that would start to show in the corner of the rooms.  That's why I would pick carpet.   I guess the nice thing is, if you buy the home, you can slap on whatever carpet you want.

    Other pet peeves:

    - Stainless steel appliances.  It is gray cold metal that can scratch easily.  I'd rather have black appliances.  In fact, I would let the realator know that the appliances would be a point where they may lose me on the house.

    - Choosing the type of granite color I wouldn't want.  (Of course, now with the radon scare, you'll probably see less granite.)  Again, they could lose me as a potential buyer.

    - Leaving in the crappy shower tiles.  I love travertine though.

    - Those stupid fancy sinks that are basically bowls sitting on a counter with holes in the bottom.

Basically, if I am buying a ranch, I'm not paying you $50,000 more for **** I have to rip out.
