I think it was to do with the way they'd been isolated when they were children.  David, in particular had been bullied so much, and the others had had it drilled into them to punish "The Boy" and to grass him up for his misdemeanours (Eg, eating when he shouldn't, resting when he shouldn't, etc).  I imagine it would be extremely difficult to mend a rift like that.

Wouldn't you be angry if you had been treated differently from another member of your family.  I know I would have been, sometimes you cannot let bygones be bygones.
