How Come on Yahoo, Suriname is Not Considered a Latin American Country?

  1. since they were not colonized by Spain or Portugal, they are not considered latin... which is stupid since France is as latin as Portugal and Spain, right?


  2. Probably the main reason that Suriname isn't classified as Latin American is due to its origin. It is a former colony of the Netherlands, and Dutch is not a Romance language such as Spanish or Portugeuse. In this sense, Suriname has more in common with Dutch possessions in the Caribbean than is would with neighbouring Brazil.

    This is not the only place where Suriname is seemingly out of place. In international football (soccer), Suriname, along with the other Guyanas, are in CONCACAF, which represents North and Central Americas and the Caribbean. It would more logically be in South America's CONMEBOL, but instead they are culturally ripped from that continent.
