How common is it for police officers to have family members who are also police officers? Are the family members parents, adult children, siblings, cousins, etc.? Are they on the same force, but working in different precincts or working in neighboring law enforcement agencies?

  1. This is a very common occurrence because there is an honor that comes with the title.  A lot of times this job passes from father to son and if the father or elder ancestor is deceased the younger relative may work in the same precinct.

  2. My ex-gf came from a family of cops. Her parents were both cops and her brother wanted to become one. I think it runs in families.

  3. It is very common. Yes they usually work in different precincts or departments.

  4. pretty common, I've known quite a few people who are following in someone in their families footsteps, not because they did it, but because it just happened that way. i think it's something in the genes personally. In my family..my dad was a fire chief and two of my brothers fire fighters, my one brother is also a police officer, and i have since become an officer as well. i guess the heroic-want to help people gene just kind of passes a long, then my grandparents were in WWII and my great grandparents in WWI. but then of course there are the people who become officers who have no one in their family that did anything even close to this profession, it's a toss up. But no i do not work on my brothers dept. but they (my dad and 2 bros) worked on the same fire dept. together
