Question:

How Could I Live Entirely In The Wild?

Since gas prices are going up, I need to know how I could live entirely in the wild (I have a tent, a bb gun, and a bike) except for sometimes coming in to talk, occasionally get some food, money, etc. I need to know how to build a fire without lighters, gas (obviously), or any other invention to make it. I need to know about plants and other edible stuff I could find. I need to know how to stay warm in winter, cool in summer. I also could use ways of not being found. I need to now how to defend myself from other people trying to beat me down for gas money, or bears.I also need to know how to keep my pet squirrel from escaping the tent or when I take him for walks.

  1. Read some books and watch History and Discovery channels. STUDY!!!!!!!!!

  2. Before you go, rent the movie Into the Wild.  This guy graduated from college and took off to the Alaskan wilderness (eventually got there).  Another movie to rent is Deliverance, that puts the shudder in most guys.  This may be a joke to you, but I have a relative who is the type of recluse you describe.  He's eaten leaves and berries, probably bark, too.  He's been beat up, stuff stolen, and probably worse.  Mostly he spends his time in jail (in the winter) for vagrancy.  Most towns don't like vagrants.  You have to go to town eventually for food (probably to steal).  Do you really want that kind of life?  But this is a joke, right?  Pet squirrel ... on a leash.  FYI, no survivalist would think of trying to start a fire with gas.  Matches---waterproof; tinder--dry.

  3. You have a lot of things to learn before you go out into the wild. You might learn some of those things in Scouts, but frankly, that is not exactly what Scouts is about.

Just for starters, you would find it difficult to carry with you all the things you would need, so  practically you would have to establish a base camp, and grow or capture your food at or near that base camp.

Now when you have thought about where you are going to live, you will have a better feeling for what your resources will be, what you will need.

Not being found? Not a good objective. Fighting with bears? forget it.

Money may not be very useful if you are really in the wild, and again, having a home base where you can hide your millions is smarter than planning to defend your money.

  4. A better way to do what you want is to buy 20 or more acres of land and be a subsistence farmer and hunter gatherer.  Build a small cabin and heat it with a wood stove. If you plan to live in a tent it will rot from sunlight and moisture in a year or two.  A bb gun is not enough of a weapon to kill much.  There are workshops on edible plants and mushrooms.  A flint and steel fire starter is easy to use and not expensive  .

  5. So you want to be a mountain man / hermit... If I seriously wanted to do that ... I'd start by heading to the library to find books ... to learn about the things I'd need to know .

And I'd want a lot of books to pass those long nights .

  6. Well, simple, just buy a cage for your squirrel, and always be on the alert for people like that, I understand your concern, but don't go too close to the edge of the forest, eg. go deep into the forest, and always have a weapon with you, for fires, smash two rocks together, (it takes patience, but works)

Try looking for wild rasberry bushes and blue berrys, remember, if you don't see another mammel eating it (bear, birds, 'squirels' then leave it where it is. Make sure to set up the tent in a flat area, and under a large tree branch, (protection from rain)

But really these people obviously don't get the seriousness of your question, and your certainly not trying to be a hermit.

    Hope this helped,

    Courtney D.
