How did people live comfortably during the Great Depression?

I heard there were about 1/4 people unemployed and many others who had a hard time finding work. However, there were those who got to live comfortably and even some who got rich after picking up cheap properties.

Any advice on that?

Are there any books that address the Great Depression in hindsight with what the masses could have done to alleviate their suffering? Since depressions are inevitable. Also, what books are currently on the market addressing the recession and preparing for a future depression? Thanks!!

There weren't nearly as many things that people considered necessities.  Most people didn't have cars, there wasn't cable TV (or ANY TV, actually), cell phones.....  the list goes on and on.
