  1. Modern recreational SCUBA diving is very safe.  The equipment is well-built and very reliable.  Quality of instruction is uniformly good.  The most dangerous thing about it is the ding-dongs who don't pay attention in class and don't listen to the Divemasters.

Think of it this way - SCUBA diving is just different enough that if there was a problem with dive accidents, it'd be all over FOX News.  Dive operations just can't afford that kind of publicity so they are very careful.

I've been diving a few years now and have read a bit about dive accidents.  In every case I've read, the problem was diver error.

So - listen up when you're learning to dive.  Ask questions, practice what you've learned.  Talk to other divers.  And when it comes time to buy equipment, don't scrimp (and for goodness sake don't buy life support online).

  2. its not the serious, honeymoon couples go scuba diving.

If your getting lessons, you should be ok and they'll teach you the basics and on. Its only dangerous if you plan on poking sharks and stuff..lol

But I doubt that! Dont worry, everybody told me Snowboarding was dangerous, and its not so bad. Snowboarding def more dangerous than scuba diving. Just dont plan on going in to deep in case of emergency you want shortest possible distance to get to the surface, and also...of course, dont poke sharks. that is if your even crazy about going in shark waters... =)  hope this helped.

  3. not very dangerous unless you're inexperienced really. I am only thirteen years old and been diving for about three years and I've never been seriously hurt.

  4. This depends entirely on where you plan to go, who with and what equipment you use.

Since you are taking lessons & if you dive with an instructor following all the rules you will be very safe indeed.

Accidents are more likely to happen  for those that dive on their own, don't follow rules or are professionals that are treasure diving in more dangerous areas.

    Have fun

  5. Recreational scuba diving is very, very safe.

Rule #1 in scuba diving is never hold your breath and breathe continuously.

Rule #2 is monitor your air pressure.  As long as you have air, everything is good.

Rule #3 is ascend slowly.  Ascending quickly can lead to the "bends" or decompression sickness.

Combine all three, and you will be a safe diver.  Seems simple enough right?  Sadly, most of the dive accidents out there can be attributed to breaking one of the aforementioned rules.

By taking lessons from a certified agency, you will be learning how to be a safe recreational diver.  If you are comfortable in the water and you want to learn, I would highly recommend taking lessons.

  6. less dangerous then driving a car!  it is so fun to.  i work at a dive shop in the fl keys and have been diving sense i was 13.  PADI offers great courses for beginning divers.  most accidents happen as a result of stupidity and you learn all you need to know in the beginner diving courses.

  7. The most dangerous piece of scuba gear (in my opinion) is the weight belt. If you are diving between 1 foot and 60 feet deep you will always be fairly safe as long as you remember to release your weights if you were to have a serious unresolvable problem while underwater. Most divers are bouyant without the weight belt so when they drop the weights, they are going to the surface (as long as there are no overhead obstructions) whether they like it or not. My best advice (after doing aproximately 250 dives) is to take it one step at a time at a rate you are comfortable with. Do not let the instructors "push" you.
