How Did Barbaro Get Injured?

There are so many rumors going around about how Barabro got fatally injured that I don't know what happaned to our beloved race horse.Barbaro making a false step and him being knocked down by another horse seem to be the most popular answers but seriously what really happened?

he took a bad step in a race broke a part in his leg, tried like he** to recover got an infection in it and had to be euthanized.

He had a misstep on the first stretch not too long after getting out of the gate.  He was never knocked down by another horse.

Barbaro took a bad step about 15 seconds after the start of last year's Preakness Stakes, breaking 2 bones in his right hind leg and cracking a third. The colt was taken to the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, PA, and underwent 5 hours of emergency surgery to repair the fractures. 23 screws and pins were inserted into the leg to hold the bones together so that they could heal- and in a near miracle, they actually DID heal. He did NOT die from the fracture, and contrary to what a LOT of people ( most of them ignorant idiots who should know better) have said, his owners did NOT try to save him for the stud fees he might have made. They made it VERY CLEAR from the start that their efforts to save the colt were motivated by LOVE, NOT MONEY !!!! To them, that colt was like their child- like a much -beloved son, and like any parent, they wanted to do all they could to save their child's life. It was a DISEASE that killed the colt in the end, not the fractures.

The disease that the colt died from, laminitis, is not well understood by the medical community.  It has multiple causes, including uneven weight distribution in the limbs, and is usually fatal in its acute form. Many researchers believe that laminitis( or founder, as it is called by those of us in the horse business) is a kind of endotoxemia. One of the best things that has happened as a result of Barbaro's death is that public awareness of this terrible illness is at an all time high-and millions of dollars have been raised for research to find the causes, to find better treatments, and perhaps, one day, to find a cure. This research will benefit ALL horses everywhere, no matter their walk of life or their history.  Another big benefit that has come about is that we now have a surgeon who can perform complicated, life-saving procedures on severly injured horses with a reasonable chance of success, and where Dr. Richardson leads, others will follow. One day, there will be someone like him at every major track and horse facility in the country, if not in the entire world, and that is no small achievement. No, this won't happen immediately, but it WILL happen eventually- and horses everywhere will be the better for it. I also believe that there will be more facilities like New Bolton that will come into existance as a result of  Barbaro's illness and death- the abscence of such facilities nationwide is one reason why so many young racehorses die who might otherwise have been saved, and this fact is also being recognized by the media and professionals in the business.  The colt's death was a tragedy, yes, but there has been a lot of good that has come out of it. I only hope for a more peaceful future for the next generation of racers to come along. Hope this answers your question.

just prior to the race, barbaro broke through the gate. he was reloaded. when the race went off, he took a bad stept and broke a bone in his leg.  by the time the jockey got off, barbaro was limping.

all of the answers are correct, we all know when a horse breaks through the gate, 99% of the time they finish dead last. he was treated like a $10,000 claimer and put back in the gate because he had just won the 1st leg of the triple crown, and the entire world was watching, and would have been up-set if he would have been scratched. he ran and tooked a mis-step a few strides out of the gate.
