Question:

How Did The Pop vs. Soda War Began? And Why?

First thing first, I am NOT interested in who calls what where. I wholeheartedly respect whatever you like to call your soft drinks.

I want to know how this national "controversy" or "war" began. Why did it started? When did it started?

Why do people feel so strongly about what they call their soft drinks or what others call their soft drinks? How did the words "soda" and "pop" come about? How did they sneak into our language? Why people from certain regions call soft drinks "soda" or "pop"?

Please cite source (if any). This is for my essay. ^_^ Thanks a bunch!

  1. To be honest I never thought much about but we dont call or soft drinks either to us ever thing is a Coke......I dont know why but we just do...

  2. well, i know that soda was offically first called "sodapop" Then it got split and somehow the midwest adapted pop and other parts called it soda.

  3. Well I know some people call them soda, others call them pop, others call them soda pops, some call them drinks or call them by name.

I was unaware that there is actually a "war" about what to call them. The only war I am aware of is the cola war between Pepsi and Coke.
