How Difficult is it to get a British passport?

I have just found out i'm pregnant... YIPEE!!!! my boyfriend is british, and I am South African, we would like to know how difficult it will be for me and the unborn baby to get british pasports? we want to move to england, but not sure of where to begin. any suggestions?

  1. I think you have to live in the UK first. Check out:

    It's very complicated.

    From what it looks like though, you have to live in the UK for three years before you can apply for British citizenship by naturalisation, and that is if you get married. If you're not married, I'm not sure how complicated that will make things.

    Your baby should be entitled to British citizenship right away, however.


  2. if you partner is british, then you baby will automaticaly be able to get a british citezenship.

    If you are married then you as a mother will also be eligable for a british citizenship without any problems.

  3. As you are not married you are not eligible for a British passport, just because you have a baby in the Uk will not help you either, this gives you no rights to live or work in the UK. If you get married to a British citizen and then get ILR you can go for British citizenship. For your baby to automatically be British at birth you have to be married to a British citizen or be British yourself.
