  1. it is very hard to do but if you have to save a crop from frost one way is heavy watering of the crop prior and during the frost if you dont have much area to protect they cover plants with hay or straw and if you have an orchard they use heat pots with a source of heat burning in it but in reality all these measures are costly and time consuming and there is no guarrenntee that you will save your crop

  2. farm I worked on, we spread hay on whatever needed to be protected. I think some places use a mist spray.

  3. some use propane heaters etc in their fields, as do citrus growers,  citrus growers also spray the trees with water to put

    a'  protective ' coating on the tree's.

  4. Several ways.  Sprinklers, huge fans (look like small wind turbines), smudge pots (create thick, heavy smoke), and covering crops with plastic, hay, tarps, burlap, ect.

  5. the farmers plant their crops in a green house so that they can control the teperature, even if it is winter they can still plant their crops.

  6. trees and mulch as in hay retain heat in ground as well as reducing losses

  7. you cant control mother nature.  For most midwest crops (corn soybeans, etc) it is all about timing and you usually do not have to worry about frost.   As long as you dont get a late one that kills the young seedling.  As for orchards in the midwest, most of the peach and apple crop were wiped out this year from a late frost.  In FL and CA you can save fruit on the trees by spraying water, the ice actually saves it.  There are lots of things you can do for gardens, but not much for hundreds of acres of crops.

And I wish people who have no idea of farming not try to answer questions, it only confuses the folks trying to get a correct answer.  Chances are if you live in the city, you dont know c**p!

  8. It depends on type of crop.

For example if the crop is annual the farmer can uses early fruiting crops so that they dont meet frost  or the farmer can arrange the plant dating so that they go to fruit set & fruit ripening  before frost .

Also they mabye use mulch .

For perennial plant they try to strengthen plant by material because that result in the good crop and a good crop is resistant in front of frost.

by the way some times the farmer for pereventing crop on frost , use water by means of spraing it on the crop just  before the frost come.
