How Do Freeview Boxes Know Which Shows Are Part Of A Series?

I have a Thomson Top Up TV freeview box. When you record something, it asks you if you just want to record one programme, or the entire series. If you select the entire series, how does it distinguish which is a new programme within that series and which is a repeat of a show you have already recorded?

Metadata will be transmitted along with the program. This simply tells the freeview box about the program. This is also how it has a discription of the programs on atm.
