Question:

How Do Gorillas Benefit Society?

by  |  earlier

Recently, an estimated 125,000 gorillas were found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This is great news! ... right? I was just wondering, what is the importance of having these creatures around?

  1. they don't benefit society, they don't need to. this planet isn't ours, we just happen to have huge egos and more power then the other animals. the animals on this planet owe us nothing, why should they? we didn't create them, all the majority of us do is cause the earth problems. we're like the noisy, obnoxious neighbors who happen to have the power to do what ever we want. so gorillas not helping society is normal, they help their ecosystem, which you could say helps us since it helps keep the planet healthy, but other then that no they don't help our society and thats a good thing,

  2. They make up a very important "large ape" voting block and it's essential to get their support in regional elections.

  3. Never really thought about it. Thanks for the 2pts.

  4. what about human society huh, the gorillas are probably angry at you and what's your importance living too.

  5. IDK AND I DON'T CARE CAUSE THERE AWESOME AND THERE COOL LOL

  6. They entertain people when they scratch their butts in a zoo...

  7. Gorillas are a part of their ecosystem. If they became extinct, the ecosystem would likely eventually adapt, but there's the chance it wouldn't. The loss of such a major player in an ecosystem might devastate it.

For instance, when the Hawaiian Shark Task Force ordered the culling of large tiger sharks following an attack in 1992 (if I remember the year correctly) the dearth of the large predators resulted in a boom in smaller sharks. The smaller sharks could feed on fish unharassed by the large tiger sharks and thus they decimated the fish population around Hawaii. Fishermen brought home half their usual catch, acutely affecting the lives of those fishermen, their families, and the industry based on their work.

Something similar might occur if we lost the Gorillas. I doubt it'd be as drastic, but really, I'd rather not find out.

  8. They are low in number I would imagine, so people are happy that there are still lots in the world.

They don't really benefit society though.

  9. Gorillas can benefit society as bushmeat

  10. Funny, one of the other young gorillas here was just asking the same question about human society!  We are the next chance to get things right when microbes wipe you so and so's out soon.  Just as we don't persecute other amimals and try to stay cool w. all primates and mamals in particular we had hoped you might learn to do the same eventually but for all of your 'education' this is the sort of thing that you wonder..

They are native to Africa. Why do you want them to go extinct? If it was up to you the only animals we would have left are livestock. What makes you think the only measure of a species right to exist is the benifit it brings to us?
