  1. Double flares are tricky and your lobes need to be well healed and pretty stretchy to wear them. You have to turn them kind of sideways and gently put them in. If it's hurting, it's too soon for you to wear double flares.

You can buy similar styles that will be much easier to insert. There are single flare plugs, where the front has a flare and the back it just straight, you wear an o-ring (like a small elastic) on the back to keep them in place. You can also get tunnels where the back screws off if you like tunnels. Some double flare jewelry will have smaller flares as well, you just have to shop around.

I'm not a big fan of double flared jewelry for this reason. You basically have to stretch to the next size just to get them in.

  2. Go to a professional piercer and ask them to put them in for you. Rather that than you do it worng, have a blowout or cause lack of bloodflow to the area.

  3. If the plugs are "flared" they will be bigger on the outside than in the center (plugs of this sort are measured in the center).  Usually the best way to insert flared plugs is to put lube on them or get them slippery with soap and water and kind of "tilt" them when you put them in.  However, if your piercings are really tight that probably won't even help you much.

Try massaging some Vitamin E Oil into your lobes.  It will soften up the piercings so that they aren't so tight (worked great for me).  Try inserting the jewelry after a long, hot shower so that your skin is softer.  Since you have damaged your ears to the point that they were bleeding you should go back to Piercing 101 and do sea salt soaks 2-4 times a day like you did while they were healing.  Try again in a few weeks once the piercings have healed and stabilized again.
