How Do I Fix My Sound?

Question

I just hooked up my new computer and I have speakers lying around somewhere. But I never needed the speakers because the sound came out of the moniter. But now the sound isn't coming out of the moniter nor does it come out of the speakers when I plug them in. So I imagine the solution lies somewhere in the computer controls.

So can someone help me out?
