Question:

How Do I Get An Alcoholics Anonymous Sponsor?

I was convicted of DUI 2.5 years ago. I have not drank since the night of my arrest. (Huge wake up call that I needed to stop partying.) I have been completely alcohol-free for 2.5 years now.

In order to clear my record, my lawyer is getting me into this special program for young offenders (I was 18 at the time of my arrest). He advised me to go to AA and get a sponsor since the judge looks kindly to that.

Can I get a sponsor on the first day?? Also, what can I expect? Is it a problem that I am an athiest?

  1. Here is what you do:

    1. Go to an AA meeting in your area

    2. Introduce yourself as a newcomer and say you need a sponsor

    3. Shut up and listen!

    4. Buy yourself a "Big Book"

    5. Stick around for some time after the meeting to meet other members.

    6. Do what your new sponsor tells you to do.

You can expect to hear the stories of people who hae stayed sober. Some only for a few days or weeks, others for many years. No it isn't a problem being an atheist.

It isn't an easy thing but IF you are serious about your life, AA can certainly help you out.

  2. Just start going to meetings, and having conversations, you will find someone you are comfortable with, just ask them to sponsor you.

People at AA, are there to get sober, and don't really care what your belief system is.

You can surly ask the first day. It will be to you benefit that you already have 2.5 years sober. congratulation.

  3. It is a HUGE problem if you're an atheist. AA requires folks to have a "Higher Power" that they pray to and expect answers from.

Since you are doing this for court, rather than for help with your drinking, lie. Go along with whatever you need to. Don't grab the first person that offers to be your sponsor, those that really want to be a sponsor are going to force a lot of religious bs on you. Wait a bit, get to know who you're dealing with first. The last thing you want is some sponsor showing up telling the judge that you're not trying.

    Good luck!

  4. Okay, you're going to have to start getting drunk again!!
