Question:

How Do I Get Tags For My Car After I Moved To Another State?

I bought a car in the state of Alabama (where I was a resident) then a week later, I moved to Tennessee because of a job offer. I didn't have a chance to apply for tags. Now what do I need to do obtain tags in the state of Tennessee? I took my paper work to the county clerk, but they said I didn't have the right paper. They were pretty unhelpful. This is actually my first time buying a car so I don't have a lot of experience with this.

  1. You're going to have to go to the DMV to get a Tennessee driver's license as well as new tags. Google Tennessee DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) or MVA (Motor Vehicle Administration) or whatever they call the office that handles licenses and tags there in Tennessee. They will have FAQ information and telephone numbers to tell you all the documents (like Alabama car title, bill of sale, etc.) that you will need to bring when you go to apply.

If all else fails, ask a neighbor or your Realtor or rental manager. They will be happy to help, I'm sure.
