Hi, I'm going to be a Senior in High School this year and was wondering what I could do to be offered scholarships in Vocal Music? I have been singing since I was very young and growing up it has become a true passion of mine. I plan on either majoring or minoring in some form of Vocal Music. How can I receive scholarships for my voice?

  1. Vocal scholarships are most likely to be offered by the colleges and universities themselves.

Schools that have particularly well-regarded programs maintain their reputations by attracting the most promising new students every year - and the scholarship is the best form of recruitment that there is.

If you are interested in scholarships, now is the time to start researching the performing arts programs at schools that you might like to attend. Websites are a great way to begin your research, because they'll provide you with all of the basic info, plus contact information for prospective students who want to learn more.

If you are hopeful of getting these types of scholarships, you need to demonstrate a lot of initiative - so you should be writing and calling the professors whose names and contact information you will find on the department websites. You can expect to have to audition - performing arts scholarships are quite competitive!

Just as an example of what you should be looking for, I've linked to the information from the performing arts program at one very well-known school, New York University. Scroll way down the page, and you'll find the "Vocal Performance" section. Other schools have information just like this available on their webpages.

I hope that helps you - good luck with your singing career!
