I'm Scottish and know my mother's maiden name, but cannot find her surname. I'm trying to find my clan but need my surname to do so, I guess.

  1. Her maiden name was her surname before she married.  It was the name she got from her father.  Your surname is the name you got from your father and it is also your maiden name.   You will take your husband's surname when you marry.

  2. I don't quite understand you question, you know your mother's maiden name, right, you don't know her surname ?

her married name ? Your family name is that of your father !

If you belong to a clan it would be in his name !

  3. Surname is simply another way of saying last name. A maiden name is a woman's surname, prior to marriage (the last name she was born with).  You just said you know her maiden name.. that IS her surname.  And unless you are adopted, certainly you know your last name (comes from your father).

I won't get into anything as to clans, etc.

  4. see if your local public library has a book of Scottish clans.  we have one.  or type "Scottish surnames" into a search engine.  or the name itself might give you hits.

  5. If you are in care, you should get in touch with the people who took you in from your mum, they should be able to tell you.
