Question:

How Do I Tell My Parents That I Got Rats?

I picked up a couple of rats from Petco yesterday and I'm very excited. They were surprisingly cheap, but they're in good health. My parents aren't exactly wild about rodents, especially rats (what a surprise when I brought home mice a while ago!) But I know rats are clean, intelligent and fairly cheap to look after. They'll find out sooner or later... Actually I need to break the news soon because I found someone whose having a moving sale and person in charge agreed to sell me a 30" x 36" x 16" cage complete w/ litter pan, food dispenser and water bottle all for just $15! I have to get it by this weekend or I'll probably lose the deal! And I can't just borrow the car without saying exactly what I'm going to do (especially w/ freaking high gas prices). It's only a few miles out and I'm willing to use only my funds for this! But I don't know how my parents will react when I tell them I got rats. Please help, I can't miss this deal; going to Petco for this equipment would cost at least $120! How do I explain that rats aren't nasty and don't smell? I got a pair of females.

I have my rats in small, temporary shelter, but they'll soon move to a "manor" if all goes well. They're very young, which makes me even more determined to keep them because they'll be easier to tame and train to become loyal pets.

P.S. I'm not the kind of person that looks go behind others' backs, but sometimes I get tired of being vetoed and make my own decisions (never bad ones, however!)

  1. say "hey mom and pops. i gots me some rats!!!" easy as that my friend

  2. actually, rats do smell. not bad, but enough to where your parents will complain if they have to walk by them everyday, which I dont think they will since you will have them in your room. tell your parents you already bought two rats, and it is your duty as an owner to give them the best care possible. and that it would be animal cruelty for them to stand in your way! (ok, scratch the last part) THEN tell them about your deal with the other person about your supplies.

  3. Show your mum them rats are cute so shell fall in love if not lie about the car thing get the cage settle the rats, then tell her it will be too long for them to be brought back so youll be stuck with them!! you could print off some research about how good they are and get her to read it show her them when the cage is clean and not smelly at all so they look nice

    good luck rats are great!!

  4. Do you have a friend that could take you? If not just tell  them you are going somewhere that's on the way.  Go to that place and get the cage.

  5. You can say that you are going out to get some books to read, or something else on the way to the pet shop and pick that stuff up as well.

If your parents ask, then say that there was traffic, or a long line. I don't usually do these type of things unless I'm trying to throw a surprise party or get a present... hehehehe.

Oh, and you can always ask a friend! They should help you!

If you absoulutely can't get the cage from the shop, build one, kinda like the temporary one!

If your parents don't hold things over you for a long time, just explain about your life going on and you have to make decisions at one point. Explain all the things that you did to us!

Good luck and have fun with your rats!

Btw, you can always tell them that they're both female and that they won't reproduce!
