How Do I build a building on a mild slope?

I live on a hill and beside my house there is a mild slope and I want to build on this slope becaues its the only place I have room. How do I build on it and make it level?

  1. You have to dig into the slope to make a flat area to build on.

    Then you put in a foundation and build on top of that.


  2. The house obviously needs to be level.

    I live in Florida, at 14' above sea level. We have water 3' below ground during parts of the year. Thus, we fill the low side with dirt until we can build at the high level. In fact, it is common to use fill anyway to make the house 2' or so above (most of the) grade. This helps drainage, prevents flooding.

    At a little higher elevations, You could also cut out the top of the hill, use concrete blocks like a basement. I've seen two story houses where the lower floor/basement/garage was fully exposed on the low side of the hill, and 1 story on the high side.

    Finally, you can split it. Put a split level house, where the 1 floor is on the high end, and the split (two floors) side on the bottom side.

    Personally, I like sloped lots. I think the garage under the house in the low side is really cool.
