How Do I get seeds out of cones?

My friend is gathering some Giant Sequoia cones from 10 year old trees. How do i get the seeds out of those cones he gathers for me?

  1. Yeah, heating it up will work. Try putting them on a cookie sheet in the oven. Take them out after a little while and see if you can shake the seeds loose. If you can't you should put it back in for longer.

    Usually, cones harvested as they yellow will release their seeds if the cones are simply kept at low humidity.  If you decide to go the cone-roasting route, I've had good luck just placing the cones on a thin (1/2") layer of straw on soil, then covering with another 2-3" of straw, then lighting the straw.  Stir the upper inch or so of cooled, burned mass together, and keep moist at 60-70oF,  

  3. i think that you can get the cone to open up by using heat. Heat the cone up and it should open up. forest fires do this and that is how new trees grow after the fire.
