How Do They Assign College Roommates?

idk if its common sense but i actually dont know. is it at complete random? i have been told that many colleges have a questionare and then using that a computer places compatible people togheter. if thats true what kind of questions would they have?

Usually the questionnaire is 1) Do you smoke? 2) Would you live with someone who smokes? 3) What kind of room do you want? (Double, Suite, 2 person, 4 person, etc)

Mine was like this:

Single Room, Double Room or Double Deluxe?

Same Gender, Coed or Upper-class (juniors and seniors)?

Nothing about smoking because my campus doesn't allow it at all.

I'm going to be a freshman studying Civil Engineering, and I got paired with a junior studying Medical Imaging Technology.

So...in my case (Institute of Technology)... there is no method to matching you up with a roomate.

But rest assured that most colleges will allow you to switch roommates if the situation is completely unbearable.
