First Off you'll need representation. You can't get work simply buy submitting photos to art directors unless they are really small/local niche magazines. Once you have an agency that you're associated with, referrals and soliciting work is usually done by the agency, you at meet and greet events or sometimes meetings. But expect to come in with a few ideas. Because you have to be very good technically as well as creatively. It also helps to hookup with stylists, since they're looking to increase their portfolio as well and allows you to get access to more models and styling.
