When you are about to board your plane, do you go through a special gate or is it on the runway? Like, how exactly do you get on your plane? Isn't it dangerous if you get on, on the runway? Im Going on a plane in September for the first time. I saw on tv once that they go on the plane on the runway. Is that true?

  1. There is a tunnel/walkway that goes from the waiting area to the plane (so it leads from the building directly to the plane) it is very rare to have to walk to the plane outside but if you do it is no where near the runway you walk from the door nearest the plane to the steps onto the plane ive only had to do that once but these days its just walkways from the building directly to the plane

  2. No, the plane isn't on the runway when you get on it. You give them your boarding pass then walk through the gate and down (or occasionally up) a ramp into the airplane.

  3. At most U.S. airports, you will board a plane through a jetway (sometimes called a "jet bridge").  It is an enclosed ramp extending from the airport terminal right up to the door of the plane.  At some smaller airports, you might board the plane through a set of stairs that either extend from the plane's door, or are mounted on a truck that is driven up next to the plane.  You won't be out on the runway, though--you'll walk out of the airport terminal onto an area where planes are parked.  Planes in this area are either parked or slowly traveling (taxiing) to and from the runways.  You will be completely safe.  Enjoy your trip!

  4. You start off at the airport by going to a special gate lounge.  When your flight is called you with get to the plane either through an "air bridge" which is a covered tunnel taking you directly to the plane's entry door.

Or, depending on the airport, you may go down some steps and out on to the tarmac and up steps to the plane.  This bit is in no way dangerous.  When planes land they pull up at a special parking bay next to the airport, not on the runway.  So if you need to get to the aircraft this way, you will be perfectly safe.

  5. You have to jump on while the plane is moving.  Don't worry it is not that hard...80% of the people that try make it.

  6. It depends.   Airlines board planes through a retractable covered "bridge".

If you're flying on a private jet, or local planes, you'll often board on the tarmac.

  7. Depends on which airline and which airport you go to. Either you go through the tube, get transferred by a bus if the plane you are going to board is far from the boarding gate or if the plane is close by, you just go through the boarding gate and take  the stairs to the plane. It should not be dangerous. So, have a good trip!

  8. Most airports have gates that you go through.  They are like hallways and they lead you directly to the door to the plane. However, if the airport is small enough, they may just bring a movable stairway up to the door and get off that way. You aren't actually on the runway, but you are outside.  We had to do this at the Burbank airport near LA.  Don't worry, you are safe either way.

  9. no, there's a covered, movable bridge from the gate to the airplane called a jetway.  You won't be on the runway.
