  1. It's usually done with a blood test.  Ask your health care provider about testing you.

  2. Diabetes can be diagnose ONLY using blood tests.

The first test to take is called A1C.  This measures you blood sugar levels of the last 90 days.  It is a very quick test. Most doctor do it in their office in 5-10 minutes IF they have the equpiment,  Otherwise, they will need a blood sampel and send it to a lab.

If the A1C test comes back with a reading of between 5 and 6, then that is NORMAL, and you probably do NOT have diabetes.

If the AC reading comes back greater than 7, then the doctor should order a second test.

The second test is called Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT).  This is a more complicated test, takes longer (3-4- hours) and can be a bit painful.  But the GTT is definitive.  it will tell you YES or NO if you have diabetes.  If it says YES, then you need to start treatment right away.

There is a third test that doctors often use.  This test is called "Serum Glucose Test, or the "Finger Stick" test.  The doctor will prick your finger and take one drop of blood into a special hand-held meter.  The result come back on about 30 seconds.

But since the A1C was invented, doctors do not use the "Finger Stick" for DIAGNOSING diabetes.  This test is used for CONTROL of diabetes.  Every diabetic should have one of these meters (most doctor give them away for free), and the diabetic needs to check their blood suagr 3-4 times a day.

ASK FOR the A1C test. If the doctor sticks you finger and puts the blood in a special hand-held meter, he did NOT do the A1C test!

  3. Well if you had type 1 diabetes within a few months you would be dead since type 1's need to inject insulin to sustain life.

  4. Here are a list of the most common symptoms of both types of diabetes.  If you are diagnosed, your doctor will tell you if you are type 1 or 2.

    Constant thirst

    Frequent urination

    Constant hunger

    Headaches

    Irritability

    Nausea or vomiting

    Blurry vision

    Unexplained weight gain or loss

    Leg cramps

    Itching skin but no rash

Reoccurring yeast infections in women, itching p***s in men

    Slow healing wounds

    Frequent boils

    Sweet smelling urine

Burning, tingling sensation in hands, feet, arms, or legs.

If you have even a few of these symptoms, you should be tested. There are blood tests that your doctor will do to determine if you are in fact, a diabetic.

A type 1 diabetic is always insulin dependent, which means they have to inject insulin up to 6 times a day.  A type 2 diabetic may or may not have to take insulin.  They can be treated with oral meds, insulin, or both. Once in awhile a type 2 can control his disease with diet and exercise.  There is no cure for diabetes, and it will not just go away.
