Ok, so I'm an active singer... well, not a famous one... but i love to sing and perform in front of my friends and family. I've been singing ever since i could speak, and i was in choir for about 4 years. But lately some friends and family memebers tell me: 'Sing From Your Stomach, Not From Your Throat.' How do i do that? Can you please help me find out? I would really appreciate it and it would help me a lot! Thanks!

  1. What they really mean is that you should sing from your diaphragm.  You breath better this way and can carry the music stronger and louder this way.  It will also save your vocal chords if you do this.  When singing from your diaphragm you will push air through your vocal chords instead of pushing it through your vocal chords, straining them.  I can't describe how to do this, that is what lessons are for.

  2. Well, I think they mean sin gfrom your diaphragm.

try this. Pant like a dog, really hard and fast and rest your hand on your stomach. Feel that? That moving up and down in and out? Well if you move your hand up a little it shoud get stronger. That is were your diaphragm is. Its a thin muscle undernieth your lungs. What you want to do is take a deep breathe withour moving your shoulders so you fill up your entire lungs and concentrate on belting from you chest and diaphragm.

Just work on it. Its should be a richer louder! sound than when you sing in your head voice.

  3. Well they are using the incorrect terminology. They mean sing from your diaphragm which I guess could be confused with your stomach because your abdomen moves up and down as you breath from your diaphragm (rather than your chest). Diaphragm breathing really is the correct way to breathe, if you watch children sleep they do it naturally. I have been taking voice lessons since I was twelve and the first thing you work on is breathing. My instructor had me place my hand on my "stomach" and make sure that as I took a breath my abdomen inflated and deflated. Another way to tell whether you are breathing correctly is to make sure your shoulders aren't moving as you take a deep breath. If you really enjoy singing I would suggest taking voice lessons.  It is very beneficial and choir instructors often do not pay attention to each vocalist as they should. Good luck

  4. Ok its almost like playing an instrument so you can play longer with out taking a breath every four measures. You take a deep breath and only you stomach so inflating and you shoulders shouldn't move. I also sing for my school choir, well I did. She taught all of us if you make you air tight with you abdominal muscles you can sing higher and louder.

  5. I will explain what it means and how it works.

Sing from your Diaphragm means that the power of air is pushed from your abdominal muscles to expel the air.  The faster the air, the more power you have.  This is a problem because the louder you are, the shorter the note.  So how do you  get loud AND long?  Resonance.

For any given note, there is an ideal shape of lips, mouth cavity, and throat opening.  This is why Operatic voices are so similar.  Very loud voices cannot control vibrato.  You can practice this method by yelling out some marching commands or singing the scale.  When you bring down the intensity, you will regain control of your vocal chords and muscles in the Larynx.  Relax the throat.  To know the opposite feeling, strain the Larynx like you're clearing your throat. Then force the other direction.  now you know how an open throat feels like.

Start by opening your throat and low notes.  Keep your throat open and sing higher notes.  keeping the same note, and intensity of effort in your diaphragm, change the shape of your mouth cavity and lips.  This is called finding a vowel.  eventually, you will sing the scale and increase your range by practicing in and out of chest and head voice.  You should be able to sing a loud voice for about 10 seconds.

Pick up a recording of Opera or chose from the following U2 songs that forces you to sing in an Operatic voice

    A day without me. (boy)

    Electric Co.

    Gloria (octobor)

    Jerusalem

    Rejoice.

    Sunday Bloody Sunday. (war)

    New Years Day.

    Two hearts.

    Surrender

A sort of  home comming. (unforgettable fire)

    Pride.

    Wire.

When you have enough range, try to sing The Star Spangled Banner completely in or out of falsetto.

  6. well dont eat for a day n then u'll be hungry n ur stomach will start singing by itself lol ;)

  7. You're not technically singing from your stomach. They just want you to be self aware about how and when you're breathing. You are really using your diaphragm. When you play an instrument, the teacher says the same thing. Breath into your lungs as far as you can and breath out but using your diaphragm/stomach area. Do breathing exercises to strengthen those muscles.

  8. if you sing from your stomach, you will push more air from your lungs and diaphragm. It helps, as singing from your throat doesn't sound as good, and you can project your voice better from your stomach.

Here's how you do it. Take a deep breath. look at your torso. as you breathe in and out, try to make your stomach rise and fall, not your lungs. Use this way of breathing. When you sing, Clench your abdominal muscles, and your stomach will propel the air further.

This person does a bit better job of explaining it than I have: http://www.wikihow.com/Sing-from-Your-St...

    hope it helps!
