Ok...well sometimes i do a virus scan, or download large files that take days or maybe hours....

If i want to leave the laptop on for about an estimated 3 hours (the estimated time for the download to finish)....is there some way...or some program that could do self-shut down the laptop at the timer you set it to?

  1. Absolutely. Use Windows Task Scheduler. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, Scheduled Tasks. Then hit add scheduled task, and follow the instructions.

  2. If you right click on the desktop and go into the screen saver tab and then choose the power settings at the bottom. You can then choose a time frame for shutting down your computer.

  3. You might be able to use the built-in windows scheduler for this, but there's always freeware options like the one I found listed below.

Note: Although it says Vista, the article states that it works on most version of windows

  4. Had same problem but here is information and download page.

  5. 3 hours ~ 10800 seconds. You can type "shutdown -s -t 10800" at the Run dialog or the command prompt; this will shut down the computer after 10800 seconds have elapsed.

    This works only on XP/Vista.
