How Do you Fix a Flooded Engine In a car?

Its An 84 Chevy Camaro and the jets in the carb are too big, but untill i get smaller ones, i need to know how to unflood it. Its pretty much a race car, and has a fuel pump. so what should i do? Should i just press the pedal all the way down and crank it or kill the fuel pump untill it turns over then flip it back on?

Thanks for the help.

  1. walk to the auto parts store and get jets of more reasonable size.

Or switch to E85 - if the rest of the fuel line will be okay with the ethanol.  It is easy to tune a carb'd engine for E85 - just put in jets that are 30% larger than ones that work well for gasoline, make sure you have a really hot spark, and advance the ignition a bit - start with 5° more advanced than for gasoline, and work from there (alternately, raise the compression ratio by about 2 ie 11:1 change to 13:1)

to start the engine; pull the plugs, clean and dry them off.  Polish the tips, and set the gap.

while doing this let the engine rest so that some of the fuel in the cylinders will evaporate.

  2. wait at least 10-15 minutes then try to start again without touching the gas

  3. hold it to the floor and turn it over a few times..that will unflood it...or just let it sit for awhile

  4. If the engine has been severely flooded you may have thinned the oil too much for decent compression. I have gotten a lot of strange looks from people when I tell them we need to change the oil to get their car started that's been towed into the shop in the winter, but it's true! In extreme circumstances I've even had to remove spark plugs and put some oil in the cylinders...
