1. The connection is tenuous at present but the hope for the future is there and that our greater knowledge about the earth will help us to conserve parts of it.

In particular it is the burning of fossil fuels that can do harm to our biosphere, so there is a chance that our greed for cheep energy will eventually be replaced by a greed for clean energy, even if it costs more.

  2. By understanding earth sciences we can make better decisions regarding human activities in the biosphere - as an example, for well over a hundred years, we stopped forest fires as soon as possible, only to allow the buildup of dead wood in forests - trees need periodic fires to clean out the deadwood and in some cases, even to open seeds for the next generation. The real significance has occurred in the last few years with fires that burned so hot it killed the forest completely - the excessive dead wood was the cause - and because of the volume of dead wood, conventional firefighting techniques couldn't stop the fire...

Geology also has an important contribution - understanding the effects of such events as volcanic eruptions helps us understand how resilient the ecosphere is - large scale eruptions have long lasting effects we can measure and understand.
