I drive in the snow a lot. Right now i have a jeep liberty with 4wd and it handles great. But I am looking to down size a little and the Saab 3-9 2.0t is the car that has caught my eye. I know that they have front wheel drive, but I've also read somewhere that they have rear wheel steering, is that true? How would you rate there snow handling?

Please only answer if you have had one, or have driven one in the snow.

  1. The car you are talking about is the New Saab TURBOX, which is a 2.8 Ltr turbo, V6 XWD. It has just come on to the market and I am not sue how many people have driven it. I drove it in Sweden last year and it is something special on snow. You may also want to read the June 2008 issue of "Automobile" car magazine which has more details.

  2. I read your question and see that you are talking about a 9-3, not the Turbo X. The NEW 9-3s have excellent XWD but the 2006 has the standard FWD. It leaves a lot to be desired in the snow. It isn't comparable with your Jeep's 4WD but it is a quick little car. When it isn't raining or snowing, it'll be a very fun car that you will enjoy. I just wouldn't recommend it when there are other cars available with better traction. However, it has a Winter button which optimizes the car for snowy, slippery roads. Like with all things, if you know your car's limits and don't mess around, you won't get stuck.

I would suggest a C320 (the V6, not the 4 cyl C240) with 4matic. It's almost the same size but with excellent traction. Mercedes' 4WD (called 4matic) is the best I've ever driven. Also consider a Subaru for comparable AWD handling. They aren't as fast but they're very reliable and stick to the ground like Velcro.
