  1. A good question, Spot-On

But if you asked a dozen Parisiens you would get that many answers, depending entirely on with what life style they choose or can afford.

The least expensive area of course is the left bank, where you will find almost profligate or peniless artists living on £100 a week.  But if you are a British army pensioner with some money left you by rich aunts you might prefer the Etoile area where £500 a week would be minimum, assuming you would be satisfied with a studio apt.

I do not live in Paris but have two friends there. Both of them were brought up in the "depression" so they very well know how to stretch their money.  One said to me "yesterday's bread is just as tasty and nutritious as to-day's bread and is half the price. A turnip or cabbage provides as many vitamins as does an artichoke or asparagus but costs much less. House wine tastes as delicious as Rochenfort1957 but costs 1/10 the price and that woolen sweater I bought at the flea last winter is just as warm as the one in the shop on Rue Honoré at 30 times the cost."

As a Canadian army veteran I envy you anticipating Paris life and wish I could do the same. My closing advice is to go to Paris, attend church often and find a lonely wealthy widow, whom you can live with and comfort.   Pip Pip and much good luck.
