  1. On the northeast corridor, which is Boston to NYC to DC, it's over 100 mph.

Other Amtrak routes are relatively slow.  They may hit 60-70 at times.

  2. approx 160 to 180 km/h, depending on the line.

Here in Spain we are atg doublle that speed.

  3. As David said, AMTRAK outside the corridor is limited to 79 mph -- But it's NOT the FRA limit on locomotives, but the FRA LIMIT ON TRACK -- FRA Class 5 track [which requirements escape me at the moment], which is what most of the US rail is maintained at, limits trains to 79 mph.  Also, AMTRAK is too strapped for money to install Automatic Train Stop [ATS] in their locomotives.  This would allow, where track quality allows, 110 mph operation.  If the engineer "Blows a signal" [passes a red], ATS takes over and stops the train by killing the power [yes, basically turning the engine off].

  4. ya if you stand up when it starts or stop I have tried and yes saddly fallen over but i was young.

  5. In the Northeast Corridor 150 mph is the fastest

On regular lines 79 mph is normal but the Locomotives

    are capable of 103 mph.

You can feel the movement but the sense of fastness comes from objects moving by the windows, but side to side movement does give you a sense of feel after you ride long enough.

  6. Indeed, as David said Amtrak's typical operating speed is 79 mph (as mandated by the FRA for passenger train speeds) and usually above 100 mph on the Northeast Corridor (Washington, D.C. - Boston).

  7. no more than 60 miles per hour
