  1. It sends out a small laser that reflects off of the pin and comes back.  The range finder calculates the time it took and then equates it to distance.  This is exacly how we calculate that the moon is moving away from the earth 3 feet per year.

Honestly, I bought one and used it and have put it away.  Its fun to use and stuff, but its too much trouble and if its at your home course, you know the distances anyways.  Plus, its hard to hit flags from over 100 yards, so If your trying to get an exact yardage from 152, think again.  I hate to say this, but my friends sky caddie is just as good because its always running on the cart and it gives good approximations.

  2. Yes it sends out a beam that is then returned (bounced back) to the source (rangefinder).  An internal calculation based on the time it takes the beam to get back is then made given a very accurate reading on the distance.

Very clever indeed but you do have to have a line of sight (be able to see your target) whereas with the GPS models such as the Skycaddie mentioned buy someone you do not need to see the target as the information is obtained from satellites.  Now that is clever.
