  1. If you want to format your computer, it's probably to start with a fresh install with no issues or extra baggage.

I'm not sure of an automated full-featured backup program that can start you fresh exactly as it is now, mainly because I do it manually. But here's what I do in a nutshell:

    - Copy personal files to disc/external hard drive

    - Burn copies of the programs I want to install later if I have no copy

    - Put Windows CD/DVD in DVD drive, boot to disc

    - Setup Windows, then install programs

    - Run Windows Update, then update programs if needed

    - Copy personal files back to computer

If you do it in this order, you can format and reinstall Windows as many times as you want should something go wrong before you copy your personal files back. Make sure to copy personal files only after you're sure the computer is fully working. Even then, you may want to keep your backup copies just in case.

Remember, after you setup Windows, any data you forgot to copy before you formatted will most likely be unrecoverable. There are recovery programs, but they can only recover what is still physically on the disk; if Windows or your programs/data used that physical space on the disk to write it's files, then it can't be brought back because it's been replaced, if it's part of the free space that Windows hasn't used yet, it should be recoverable. However, writing to disk is based on the position of the disk when it's spinning, so it's random and can't really be dictated. It's safer to be paranoid and assume everything you forget will be lost.
